Body’s a Bad Monster is a non-linear queer autofiction that transcends genre, mixing prose and poetry to create two distinctive narrators. In rejecting traditional storytelling, it allows the book to mirror the feeling of disassociation, a critical aspect of the piece. It is at once true and fictional, which gives the book a sense of immediacy and vulnerability – almost as if we are reading a diary. Rather than placing focus on the pain of survival, Perez uses erasure text to intentionally refuse to engage with male voices and violence. Instead, Body's a Bad Monster highlights the life that survival permits, one of personhood and acceptance. An experimental, tender, and darkly funny piece of hybrid fiction, the book explores the hard-won humor and joy that it takes to survive through mental illness, trauma, and, ultimately, recovery in the world today, and will appeal to fans of Maggie Nelson, Jenny Offill, Carmen Maria Machado, and Mona Awad. Perez workshopped parts of Body's a Bad Monster under Mona Awad and the initial opening to it was the recipient of the 2021 Harvey Swados Award for Fiction.

Rowan Perez is local to New England and is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst MFA program for Poets and Writers (2021).
